O2 Staff Volunteers Kick off Awareness of Autism and raise over €8,000 in One Day!

I had a dream on Thursday last, the 2nd of April 2009.

I dreamed it was World Autism Awareness Day and I was at a Penalty Shoot Out at the O2 offices in Dublin.

And Ken Doherty was there, and Johnny Giles, and Keith Duffy, Brian Ormond, Rob Ross ....

Oh Wait, It wasn't a dream!

Nobody questioned why the Smurf in 2 inch Bally heels squeezed her way into the frame (5th from right)
And doesn't Ken Doherty know how to hold a wooden stick aye?

The lads line up for a penalty
From Left we have Ger Gilroy and Tom Dunne from Newstalk 106, Bernard Flynn, Brian Ormond, Keith Duffy, Niall McCrudden, Rob Ross and Ken Doherty

Keith giving a speech explaining just how much O2 has helped to raise for Irish Autism Action and what it means to him as the father of Mia who was diagnosed with Autism in late 2002.

You can read more about Mia and how much her family have done to help others living with autism here.

Keith takes a punt. Looking very fit too!

The Legendary Ken Doherty gets some expert coaching from the Great Johnny Giles.
He is used to smaller balls.

Johnny shows how it's done lads.

The lovely Tom Dunne from Newstalk 106 has a go at the goal with Peter McKenna refereeing in the background. Fiona Meehan of O2 Corporate Affairs at keeps score.

Peter also works at O2 and has a son, Christopher aged 3, who was diagnosed with Autism in the Solas Centre in 2007. You can read more about Christopher here

And this is what it was all about.

Kevin Whelan (my boss at IAA) Sinead Smith and Fiona Meehan of O2 and Keith Duffy share the Big Cheque.

A Big Thank you to the ALL the staff volunteers participated and donated, raising a total of €4160.27 on the day.

This was through the shoot out, A Sports and Social gig at the Laughter Lounge and "Wear Blue for IAA" activity which even saw O2's most dedicated Celtic fans (Eamon Noland and Garry Mannering) wearing Rangers Blue for the Shoot out.

And a big thanks to O2 Corporate who matched their contributions euro for euro giving us a total of €8320.54!

This will go towards national projects like the Solas Diagnostic Centre, our Information and Helplines, Advocacy and Parent Support.

Thanks also to the celeb's and sports legends who donated their time to make it such a memorable and fun day.

xx

Thanks, it was a bit of an out of body experience for me, cannot quite believe I was there, or explain how I muscled my way into those photos - It was a pleasure to meet them all and they were very good sports (as you can see)
xx

hahaha - the smurf in heels doesn't look at all unhappy to be the squishie in the middle! Fantastic work here, Lisa, and really impressive joined-up thinking with the blogging (an excellent post on content and picture front) and the amount raised. You inspire me!
